Chapter Seven Design is Andy and Joe Smith, a husband and wife studio in the East Midlands. We started working together in 2015, a year after our son was born, when we both wanted work we cared about and a life that fitted around him. From the first conversation to the final detail, you work with the two of us in your own home, and the people who design your project are the people who see it through.
A transformation like that takes more than a good eye. Before Andy designed homes, he spent over twenty years as a building services coordinator on major commercial projects, drafting and 3D modelling how a building’s hidden systems would be coordinated, manufactured and installed without clashing. It is the part of a building nobody sees and everything depends on. He brings that same precision to a house: structure and services first, then the design. Most studios start with the look. We start with the building, so the problems that cost time and money show up on the drawings, not halfway through the build when the walls are open and the money is committed.
Andy leads the design and the technical read. Joe leads everything around it: the budget, the timeline, the suppliers, the hundred decisions a week, and the relationship with you. She is the reason the months of your project feel handled rather than chaotic.

A decade of full residential renovations, every one of them led personally by the two of us. The studio is supported by a long-established network of trades, contractors and specialist suppliers we know and trust, but the design, the decisions and the relationship rest with the founders throughout.

It’s work that depends on understanding the building as much as the design. Knowing how a home is put together, what its structure will allow, and which decisions need to be made early. That grounding is what lets us design a home where every part holds together, and where the people living in it feel looked after at every stage.

A full-home renovation is the biggest project most people will ever take on, and choosing the right interior design studio to lead it matters. It is not only a financial commitment. It is months of decisions, disruption and trust, and a home you will live in for years afterwards. We do not take that lightly.
From the first conversation, our intention is the same. To handle the whole thing. Spatial planning, joinery, lighting, finishes, furnishings, final styling and the coordination of every trade in between. Our job is to make sure that the months of getting there feel organised and properly looked after, even when the project itself is anything but.
We also take on smaller projects, where the brief is more focused and the scope sits within a single part of the home.
